Biker Truisms

This came in to my e-mail inbox a few weeks ago. I came across it today as I was cleaning out my in-box and thought it was a keeper.

Biker Truisms

The only good view of a thunderstorm is in your rear view mirror.

Four wheels move the body; two wheels move the soul.

You start riding with a full pot of luck and an empty pot of experience. The object is to fill the pot of experience before you empty the pot of luck.

If you wait, all that happens is that you get older.

Midnight bugs taste just as bad as noon time bugs.

Saddlebags can never hold everything you want, but they CAN hold everything you need.

Don't ride so late into the night that you sleep through the sunrise.

Sometimes it takes a whole tank full of gas before you can think straight.

Never hesitate to ride past the last street light at the edge of town.

Respect the person who has seen the dark side of motorcycling and lived, and still rides.

Young riders pick a destination and go. Old riders pick a direction and go.

A good mechanic will let you watch without charging you for it.

Whatever it is, it's better in the wind.

Two-lane blacktop isn't a highway - it's an attitude.

Keep your bike in good repair. Motorcycle boots are not all that comfortable for walking.

People are like Motorcycles: each is customized a bit differently.

Sometimes, the best communication happens when you're on separate bikes.

When you're riding lead, don't spit.

Catching a yellow jacket in your shirt @ 70 mph can double your vocabulary.

Everyone crashes. Some get back on. Some don't. Some can't.

If you can't get it going with bungee cords and duct tape, God's telling you to stop for the night.

Only a Biker knows why a dog sticks his head out of a car window

JD_Plan.JPGI have done a fair amount of riding this year, taking the bike to work on any day it's not been raining or snowing, but very little of my riding has been just for the joy of the trip. My weekends have been consumed with homework for school, so I've not had the opportunity to take a nice relaxing ride. This semester of school will be over at the end of the month; this ride will open up my summer of riding.

The destination will be the the oldest registered distillery in the US, Jack Daniel's Distillery in Lynchburg, TN.
http://www.jackdaniels.com/TheDistillery/VisitingLynchburg.aspx

The trip there should be a scenic one: http://tinyurl.com/JDMCRide

It's a pretty long ride, over six hours estimated by Google, so we'll probably leave around 8AM and then stop along the way somewhere for some lunch. I need to do some research to see where we may be around lunch time and have some plan for where we can eat. It would be nice to find some mom-and-pop restaurant....have to see what's available.

Ideally, we'll arrive in Lynchburg around 3PM and have time for the tour.

Once we've seen the sites at the distillery, we'll mount up and head back home primarily on the Interstate.

Sounds like a nice trip to me...

Nice trailer

With the Cherokee Survivor Rally in happening just over the mountain in Cherokee, NC this weekend, there are a lot of motorcycles in town. I did not ride much (they were predicting rain and thunderstorms), but I did take the bike to the Honda dealer to pick up some Oil and a filter so I could change the oil on my wing. While there, I noticed this trailer. There are a lot of trailers behind Goldwings, but some people get very creative.

Vectrix USA

The Vectrix electric maxi-scooter is the world's first high-performance electric two-wheel vehicle to offer all the benefits of a traditional gasoline-powered scooter but without the noise, pollution, expensive maintenance, frequent oil changes, and regular trips to the gas station.

If the price tag were not so much, this would be a very interesting scooter for the daily commute.

Atomic Man Triathlon

This past weekend was a lot of fun.

I was part of the communications team for the Atomic Man Triathlon. The even was down in Vonore - about 60 miles from home.

I left home around 6:30 - the event was scheduled to start at 8AM. I got there plenty early and took the extra time to pre-ride the course so I could get an idea of the area I would be covering during the event.

My job during this event was to ride around the course with a referee to allow him to monitor the participants to ensure they were following all of the rules.

The referee and I rode around the course for about 4 hours - until most of the bicycle riders were finished.

After that, I just hung around for a while and visited with the other communications guys.

I got home around 4 PM and had put around 300 miles on the motorcycle.

A very fun day that I would gladly do again

Trail of Tear Ride 2007

We had a wonderful ride this year. We did about 800 miles over the 3 days.

We all left Friday morning and rode over to Cherokee NC for the Group ride to Thunder Creek H-D in Chattanooga TN. It rained on us basically the entire way down there, but we had a good time. Tom had problems with his motorcycle at the last minute, so he just pulled the camper ahead of us. When we arrived at the camp site Friday evening, he had dinner cooked for us when we got there - very nice.

Saturday was the big ride. The weather was beautiful and the ride rode along pretty quickly. This portion of the ride is escorted (leading/following along with the pack, blocking traffic, etc.) by police (and they have a helicopter or three flying over top); they shutdown a section of I-65 in AL for us at one point. It's a weird feeling to pass a cop at 80 MPH and just look over and wave at him. At one point (on Hwy 72 just east of Huntsville I believe) we hit 114 MPH.

Sunday was nice as well. We had 300 miles to ride home, so we took the interstate most of the way (we picked up I-40 just East of Nashville).

We're already making plans to attend next year.

And one of the guys in the group that I was with (there were 10 of us on 7 motorcycles) is thinking about starting a motorcycle club. He's thinking about the name "Heaven's Devils" since "Hell's Angels" is already taken. :-)

Riding along at elevations over 4000 feet made a hot day a very nice day.

We took the I-40 over to Ashville where we picked up the Blue Ridge Parkway. We took the parkway all the way to Cherokee. From there, we just took 441 over the mountain into Gatlinburg.

It only got warm once we came back into Pigeon Forge. Otherwise, it was in the mid 70's to mid 80's all day long.

fundraising

I went to the Gibbs High School to lead their first annual fund raising ride. The ride was organized by Tom, Heather and others.

There was not a big turn-out for the ride; only about 20 bikes. The event did get coverage on the local news (WBIR).

The ride was pretty short. It left the school and went North on Tazewell Pike up to Luttrell. From there, we took Hwy 61 into Blaine. We made a quick stop on Rutledge Pike for the riders to stretch their legs. Then we took Circle Road back over to Emory and looped back to the highschool. Not a long ride, but some nice riding.

I look forward to the event growing and next year being bigger and better.

Ride to Norris Dam

In Motorcycle | | No Comments | No TrackBacks

On Sunday, Lori and I took a ride and ended up at the Norris Dam. Neither of us had been up to the Dam before, so it was a neat experience.

TVA: Norris Reservoir

It turned out to be a very nice ride. We took Hwy 139 to 11E in Strawberry Plains where we took Mascott/Mine Road over to 11W for a short jog to Roberts Road. Roberts Road took us up to Emery Road which took us over to 441 in Halls. We took 441 all the way up to Norris. We missed a turn just before we got to Norris, so we ended up taking a ride thru down-town - it was a neat little side trip.

All-in-all, not a long day of riding (about a total of 5 hours including stops), but a very enjoyable ride.

SOLDIER SUPPORT RIDE- EAST TENNESSEE : Photos

On Saturday, I jumped on the motorcycle and rode over to Jefferson City to join in the 3rd Annual Soldier Support Ride for 278th. It only required a phone card or $10.00 donation.

It was a beautiful day for a ride!
We raised just over $2000 and 196 cards, had 162 bikes and 212 riders.

The start of the event was at Jefferson City's old Wal-mart store. The ride left at 1:00pm and concluded at the Ryan's resturant in Morristown.

Cherokee Survivors Rally

Just got back from a great day of riding and looking at motorcycles.

Wesley and I rode over to Cherokee for the Cherokee Survivors Rally on Sunday. It was a beautiful day for riding. We rode US 25 over to Hot Springs, where we took SR 209 South to Lake Junaluska, then US 19 through Maggie Valley to Cherokee. Our drive back went though Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge. Only about a 200 mile trip, but a nice ride!

I had lunch at Virgil's downtown Sevierville today. As I was leaving, I noticed a flyer announcing the Smoky Mountain Thunder Memorial Ride.

They have the flyer on their web site:

I did some searching and found a description of last year's ride here: 2003 Smoky Mountain Thunder Memorial Ride

Sounds like a nice ride.

A great weekend for riding

It was a beautiful weekend - sunny days with temperatures hovering around 80 degrees.

I took advantage of this beautiful weather to spend some time riding the Motorcycle.

On Saturday, I rode wth a friend - we just rode around mostly. We did go up to Colboch Harley-Davidson. It was amazing how busy that place was!

Sunday was some time for solo-riding. There is nothing like getting away from everything and just riding.

Ride to Madisonville

In Motorcycle | | No Comments | No TrackBacks

The forcast for today was for the temperature to reach the mid 60's in the afternoon. I had planned on going to a martial arts training session in Madisonville (about a two hour drive from home) and decided that the weather would be too pretty to not take the bike.

I left the house around 7:30 am. The temperature at that time was only 28 degrees - it was cold and foggy. Before I had gone 10 miles, ice had formed on the windshield on the bike.

The temperature had warmed as I traveled and the ice melted before I arrived.

When I was leaving Madisonville, the weather was beautiful. I had a wonderful ride home.
